Bright Matter: Introduction to Neon Bending

Location: UrbanGlass in Downtown Brooklyn

Dates: Monday, July 8 - Friday, July 19, 2024
Times: 9:00am-3:00pm

Did you know all neon signs are handmade from glass tubing? Illuminate the summer with a neon masterpiece of your own design! Beginning with an exploration of how noble gases interact with electrical currents to produce light, investigate the technical and aesthetic aspects of this unique art form. Working with various torches to weld and bend glass tubes, spend time planning, creating, and lighting your very own glowing sign. Participants receive a daily MetroCard for travel to/from UrbanGlass.

Teen Makers: 3D Industrial Design & Manufacturing

Location: MakerSpace in the Brooklyn Army Terminal, Brooklyn

Dates: Monday, July 22 - Friday, August 2, 2024
Times: 9:00am-3:00pm

What will you MAKE this summer? Are you excited about industrial design, fabrication, and advanced manufacturing? Spend two weeks in MakerSpace NYC's 15,000 sq ft state-of-the-art space where you'll learn about design, use advanced manufacturing tools, and observe other CNC machines in action including the router, milling machine, and waterjet cutter. Design and create a project from start to finish using CAD software, 3D printers, and laser cutters, and visit advanced manufacturing facilities in the Brooklyn Army Terminal to see how this technology is used to make everything from sunglasses, to biotech artwork, to chocolate! Don't miss this amazing opportunity to build a portfolio, learn about internships, career paths in industrial design and advanced manufacturing, and receive a free six-month student membership to Makerspace NYC. Participants receive a daily MetroCard for travel to/from the Brooklyn Army Terminal.

Radiant Stories: Introduction to Stained Glass

Location: UrbanGlass in Downtown Brooklyn

Dates: Monday, August 5 - Friday, August 16, 2024
Times: 9:00am-3:00pm

Stained glass windows tell dazzling stories through the interplay of color and light. Explore the fundamentals of this ancient artform using the Tiffany copper foil method. Learn how to draw designs, select color palettes, cut sheet glass, sand with grinders, and solder the pieces together into flat panels and 3D sculptures. Create complex imagery and enhance your designs with other techniques, like painting with enamels and fusing glass in the kiln (oven). From geometric patterns to elaborate compositions, take inspiration from history and personal experience to tell your own radiant stories in glass. Participants receive a daily MetroCard for travel to/from UrbanGlass.

The Art of Stone Carving

Location: Pellettieri Stone Carvers' Academy in Port Morris, Bronx

Dates: Monday, July 8 - Friday, July 19, 2024
Times: 9:00am-3:00pm

This summer, put down your phone, pick up a chisel, and learn the art of stone carving! From university libraries to churches and high-end homes, stone carvers are busy restoring buildings and sculpting new designs. How would it feel to learn their craft and transform a piece of rock into a complex sculpture? Find out during this two week program for beginners. Create and take home impressive carvings but more importantly, gain a sense of pride as you tackle difficult challenges to develop these ancient and in-demand skills. Participants receive a daily MetroCard for travel to/from the Stone Carvers' Academy.
