All programs take place Monday, April 14 through Friday, April 18, from 9:00am to 3:00pm each day.
Location: NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics, Lower East Side, Manhattan
Do you want to be an astronaut? Join the NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics (NYCCAAM) for a week of astronaut and pilot training! Explore flight simulators in the NASA Aerospace Education Lab, construct and launch rockets, design in the 3D printing lab, and build and program Mars rovers with SPIKE Prime LEGO robots. During this action-packed week, simulate astronaut training and learn about the history of space exploration to prepare for your ultimate mission: a simulated space adventure.
Location: Salvadori Center at Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation, Midtown West Manhattan
Ever wondered how a skyscraper is designed and constructed? This spring break, join the Salvadori Center to learn how architects, designers, engineers, and builders create NYC’s built environment. Try your hand at model-making, push your thinking with design challenges, learn from professional architects, developers, and engineers about their work, and get a behind-the-scenes look at unique buildings of NYC.
Location: Sound Collective, Lower Manhattan
Spark your inner music producer at Sound Collective! Spend spring break at a state of the art music school with all of the newest equipment and technology and learn the basics of music production. Put your creativity to the test using computers fully loaded with industry leading software as instructors guide and teach you how to bring your ideas to life.
Location: Makerspace NYC, Brooklyn Army Terminal
Spend a week at MakerSpace NYC at the Brooklyn Army Terminal exploring engineering, sound, speed, light, magnetism, and electricity! Each day, learn how to safely use hand tools, small electronics, magnets, and laser cutters to explore the engineering design process and learn about making things from artists and Makers. Keep notes and sketches about all the week's projects in a light-up science journal using a simple circuit and LEDs that you create.
Location: Rocking the Boat in Hunts Point, Bronx
Do you enjoy nature and learning outside? The Bronx River is an incredible habitat in NYC that supports many bird and fish species. Join Rocking the Boat for a week of hands-on investigations and river exploration. Learn to row wooden Whitehall rowboats (hand-built by other students!), navigate the Bronx River, observe wildlife up close, and begin to understand local environmental issues that impact the river and the animals living in it. No previous boating experience necessary and all swim abilities are welcome. All participants are required to wear life jackets (provided by Rocking the Boat) during all boating and on-water activities.
Location: Queens Zoo in Corona, Queens
Running a zoo is quite an endeavor that requires many different jobs. Spend a week at the Queens Zoo learning about some of the careers necessary to run a zoo. From scientists to zookeepers, veterinarians to architects, engineers to landscapers, and carpenters to educators, meet some of the staff and learn about what it really takes to care for the collection of animals and keep the Zoo open. Through experiments, behind the scenes activities, and fun projects, learn about the science and practical knowledge needed to run a zoo.
Location: Makerspace NYC, Staten Island
Help protect NYC's ecosystems this spring break! Invent solutions to environmental problems while exploring the Makerpark's bee hives and butterfly habitats to learn about urban plant and animal ecosystems. Watch our guest beekeepers and urban naturalists care for bees and extract honey and wax from the hives. Build bee and pollinator habitats, birdhouses, and more using woodworking tools, laser cutters, and 3D printers. Make fun household and beauty products from beeswax and plants. (Note that campers will be supervised while using all equipment and will not be handling bees, who are hibernating this time of year.)
