STEM Matters NYC Programs: Entering Grade 1

Shine this summer with STEM!

Explore the one-week camps for students entering grade 1 in September. All these camps take place Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm each day.

AquaScience

Location: NY Aquarium in Coney Island, Brooklyn

Dates: Monday, July 17 - Friday, July 21, 2023

Explore the ocean just like a scientist would! Are sea lions good swimmers? Do all penguins live in cold habitats? Join the NY Aquarium team of marine scientists to investigate a different question everyday through hands-on experiments. Join other young scientists and discover the many species at the NY Aquarium.

Jr. Feathers and Fur and Scales, Oh my!

Location: Genovesi Environmental Study Center, Bergen Beach, Brooklyn

Dates: Monday, July 10 - Friday, July 14, 2023

Some animals have fur, some have scales, and some have feathers! Spend a week exploring six different classes of animals: reptiles, mammals, insects, amphibians, birds, and fish. Get up close and personal interacting with the Environmental Study Center's animal residents while learning about their different characteristics and adaptations. Each day will be filled with crafts, hands-on activities, animal encounters, and inquiry-based explorations.

Heritage Farm Heyday Jr.

Location: Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden in Randall Manor, Staten Island

Dates: Monday, July 24 - Friday, July 28, 2023

Looking for a unique, hands-on farming experience? Check out Snug Harbor's Heritage Farm! Get inspired by exploring nature, daily walk-and-talks, and art-making to deepen your powers of observation and develop a respect for all living things. By week's end, you'll know where your food comes from and learn easy recipes to make at home.

Intrepid Innovators

Location: Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Far West Side, Manhattan

Dates: Monday, August 7 - Friday, August 11, 2023

Spend a week at the Intrepid exploring the sea, air, and space! Learn about modes of transportation to discover buoyancy and the four forces of flight. Construct space capsules using recyclable materials and create multi-use vehicles based on the design elements of ships, aircraft, and spacecraft. Enjoy the museum’s NASA resources and exhibits, all aboard a world famous retired aircraft carrier.

Nature Adventurers

Location: Wave Hill in Riverdale, Bronx

Dates: Monday, August 7 - Friday, August 11, 2023

Ready to dig into nature? Join Wave Hill for an imaginative week-long nature play experience to develop a sense of curiosity and connection to the natural world. Practice your observation skills, explore nature, and build personal relationships with plants, animals, and ecosystems.

Queens Farm Summer STEMsation

Location:  Queens County Farm Museum

Dates: Monday, July 31 - Friday, August 4, 2023

Welcome future farmers to the Queens County Farm Museum! Do you know what it takes to be a farmer? Come learn about food systems, seasonality and season extension, sustainable practices, how livestock are part of a farm, and much more. Each day, you will do real farm work, explore a different aspect of farming, and use your imagination to reimagine Queens Farm as if it were your own homestead!
