STEM Matters NYC Programs: Camps for Grade 1

Animal Habitats

Location: Genovesi Environmental Study Center, Brooklyn, NY

Dates: Monday, July 8-Friday, July 12, 2019

What animals live in the desert? How do animals in the tundra survive the harsh cold? Campers will discover these answers and more by learning about different habitats around the world and how animals adapt to their habitats in order to survive and thrive.  Throughout this exciting week, campers will be engaged in many hands-on activities and animal encounters at GESC to better understand why animals live where they do.

Location: Prospect Park Zoo (WCS), Brooklyn, NY

Dates: Monday, July 15-Friday, July 19, 2019

Grab your passports and get ready for a wild trip around the world! Campers will discover what makes animals in the arctic different from those in Australia as they embark on adventures through the seven continents. Throughout their journey campers will meet animals up close, explore nature, create zoo crafts, and travel to animal exhibits - all while discovering unique adaptations of animals all over the world.

Seaside Explorers

Location: New York Aquarium (WCS), Brooklyn, NY

Dates: Monday, August 12-Friday, August 16, 2019

Come explore our own backyard in this hands on, beach based summer camp! Be prepared to get sandy as we discover the many living things that call our Coney Island beach home. You will explore the Aquarium exhibits and then, on the beach, meet local animal ambassadors and learn how you can be a better neighbor!

What's For Lunch?

Location: Bronx Zoo (WCS), Bronx, NY

Dates: Monday, August 12-Friday, August 16, 2019

During this mouthwatering week, campers will explore what it takes to be a carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, and scavenger. Each day, campers will meet an animal that likes to eat something special. Through educational games, dramatic play, sensory exploration, art play, exhibit visits, up-close animal encounters and hands-on science investigations, campers will understand what it takes for that animal to get dinner on the table.  Campers will share their camp experience with caregivers on Friday at a special closing ceremony!

Home Sweet Home, Animal Style

Location: Central Park Zoo (WCS), Manhattan, NY

Dates: Monday, July 8-Friday, July 12, 2019

Travel the world's biomes, from the driest deserts to tropical forests to explore a range of animal habitats and have up-close animal encounters along the way! Throughout the week, campers will have habitat-themed adventures and enjoy hands-on discoveries as they investigate our exhibits around the zoo.

Plants, Animals, and Me!

Location: Genovesi Environmental Study Center, Brooklyn, NY

Dates: Monday, July 15-Friday, July 19, 2019

Plants, animals, and people depend on each other in many ways! Campers will investigate and explore these relationships through hands-on activities, art projects, and animal encounters at Genovesi Environmental Study Center (GESC). Campers will also learn about plant parts and how plants grow. Throughout the week, we will tend to the garden and harvest plants for our snacks and for the animals that live here at GESC.

Wild Adaptations

Location: Queens Zoo (WCS), Queens, NY

Dates: Monday, August 5-Friday, August 9, 2019

Let's explore what it takes to survive out in the wild! Just like us, animals need shelter, food, and water to survive. Every animal plays an important role in the web of life! We will hide like prey, hunt like predators, search for special adaptations of animals in the zoo and so much more this week!
