STEM Matters NYC Programs: Camps for Grade 7

Full STEAM Ahead This Summer!

Explore the one-week camps for students entering grade 7 in September. All these camps take place Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm each day.

Aerospace Academy

Location: NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics, Lower East Side, Manhattan

Dates: Monday, July 11 - Friday, July 15, 2022 or Monday, July 25 - Friday, July 29, 2022

Want to join a mission to space? First you will need to train for it! Immerse yourself in flight simulation in our NASA Aerospace Education Lab, learn about aeronautic principles by using our 3-D printing lab, engineer and launch rockets, and program Mars rovers with EV3 LEGO robots. During this action-packed week, campers will simulate astronaut training and learn about the history of space exploration to prepare for their ultimate mission: a simulated space adventure.

Our oceans are in peril but you can help! Work with marine scientists to create a research investigation centered around conservation of local NY marine species. Through art, policy, technology, citizen science, and hands-on research, we will work towards solving the problems that our ocean is facing now and in the future.

Young Maker Gravity Camp

Location: Futureworks MakerSpace in the Brooklyn Army Terminal, Brooklyn

Dates: Monday, August 1 - Friday, August 5, 2022

Calling all MAKERS! Defy gravity with us and learn about rotational force, magnetism, and other forces that defy the power of gravity. Using hand and small power tools, under close supervision by experienced makers, makers will create fun projects like hoverboards, bottle rockets, and boomerangs. Makers will also use high tech tools including laser cutters and 3D printers to create other innovative building projects.

Zoo Keepers in Training

Location: Central Park Zoo in Midtown, Manhattan

Dates: Monday, August 15 - Friday, August 19, 2022

Think you've got what it takes to be a zookeeper? Put your skills to the test during this hands-on, interactive week. Roll up your sleeves and get messy as we get up close to animals, meet zookeepers, and see what it takes to care for the animals at the Central Park Zoo.

Discovery Camp

Location: Staten Island Museum in Randall Manor, Staten Island

Calling all science enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers! Discover the wonders of our natural world while hiking local trails, studying pond life and enjoying interactive workshops with our community partners, including Urban Park Rangers and Freshkills Park Alliance. Go behind the scenes of the Museum’s natural science collection and engage in hands-on activities, games, and creative design projects. Whether you are harnessing the sun to cook in a solar oven, exploring the importance of sustainable architecture, or mapping local biodiversity, each challenge will channel your creative energy and spark your imagination!

Wildlife Makers Camp

Location: Queens Zoo in Corona, Queens

Dates: Monday, July 11 - Friday, July 15, 2022

Do you love to tinker, design, and create? Join us to learn about wildlife and conservation in the Zoo using a variety of resources and everyday materials in exciting ways. Throughout the week, we'll explore and experiment to find creative solutions to some real-world concerns about the animals in our care.

Zoo Designers

Location: Bronx Zoo in Bronx Park, Bronx

Dates: Monday, July 25 - Friday, July 29, 2022

How do zoo exhibit designers go from exhibit sketch to an actual new space for amazing animals to live in and visitors to experience? In this week long program, campers will learn about basic exhibit design, animal care, and graphic design through exhibit visits, participating in up close animal encounters and engaging activities. Campers will then use what they've learned to design a mock exhibit of their very own!
