Service in Schools Libguide: Students Advocating For the Environment

Celebration of Service 2024

Students Advocating For the Environment is a weekly youth service-learning and environmental education program for students in grades 6-10. During spring 2024, students participated in service-learning during an academic class or after-school club. They engaged in research policy related to an environmental issue affecting NYC and their local communityair quality, fabric waste and fast fashion, food waste, and water conservation—and then developed an advocacy campaign to raise awareness and promote action.

Students completed activities such as interviewing experts and analyzing engaging media to build background knowledge on the topic. Then they drafted components of an advocacy campaign and took an action to reduce and reuse waste in their school or local community. Students shared their learning and advocacy pieces with an authentic audience of peers, families, and educators at the Service in Schools Celebration of Service in May 2024.
