STEM Matters NYC Programs: Camps for Grade 6

Aquarium Directors

Location: New York Aquarium (WCS), Brooklyn, NY

Dates: Monday, July 8-Friday, July 12, 2019

Running an aquarium is a lot of work – are you up for it? Through hands-on activities and behind the scenes experiences, you will learn all about the different people who come together to make the New York Aquarium run. This wide-ranging camp will cover animal care and health, water quality, and engineering. Come join the staff for a week and be a part of the NY Aquarium team!

Jr. Animal Caregivers

Location: Genovesi Environmental Study Center, Brooklyn, NY

Dates: Monday, July 8-Friday, July 12, 2019

Get ready to experience an exciting week interacting with and observing the animals at Genovesi Environmental Study Center (GESC)! Campers will learn about animals’ habitats both at GESC and in the wild while discovering animals' needs and routines as junior animal caregivers. Campers will learn how to feed and handle the animals as well as build enrichment toys for their stimulation and exercise.

NYC Aerospace Camp

Location: NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics, Manhattan, NY

Dates: Choose one of the following sessions:

  • Program C: Monday, July 22-Friday, July 26, 2019
  • Program D: Monday, July 29-Friday, August 2, 2019
Want to join a mission to space? First you will need to train for it! Explore flight simulators in our NASA Aerospace Education Lab, launch rockets you constructed, and build Mars rovers with EV3 LEGO robots. During this action-packed week, campers will simulate astronaut training and learn about the history of space exploration to prepare for their ultimate mission: a simulated space adventure.

Queens Farm STEMsation

Location: Queens County Farm Museum, Queens, NY

Dates: Monday, July 29-Friday, August 2, 2019

Do you have what it takes to be a farmer? Are you ready to design your own homestead? Join us at the Queens County Farm Museum to find out! Learn about food systems, crop diversity, season extension, and sustainable practices happening at the Farm. Each day, campers will do actual work in the growing fields and explore a different aspect of farming: crops, animals, compost, cooking (and tasting) a meal in our historic farmhouse. The program culminates with a special family day where each camper can showcase their personal farm project! 

Young Maker Gravity Camp

Locations: MakerSpace NYC Futureworks Makerspace, Brooklyn, NY

Dates: Monday, July 22-Friday, July 26, 2019

Defy gravity with us at MakerSpace NYC Futureworks Makerspace! Young makers will learn about the physics of buoyancy, density, and other concepts. Then, using hand tools, power drills, and drivers safely with close supervision by experienced makers, campers will create fun projects like hoverboards. On the final day of camp, families are invited to join us to see projects up close.

Conservation Scientists

Location: Queens Zoo (WCS), Queens, NY

Dates: Monday, July 15-Friday, July 19, 2019

Campers have an amazing opportunity during this week-long camp to think critically about climate change and how this may affect animals. They will learn about Wildlife Conservation Society scientists working to save wildlife and wild places. Using the zoo and up-close animal encounters as a resource, campers will simulate, build, incorporate technology, and have fun while conquering pressing issues of our time!

Jr. Conservation Scientists!

Location: Bronx Zoo (WCS), Bronx, NY

Dates: Monday, July 22-Friday, July 26, 2019

Our planet's biodiversity is in jeopardy but fear not... scientists are working hard to protect it!  Through fun and exciting visits from animal guests, exhibit visits, hands-on, inquiry-based activities and more, your camper will learn what different Wildlife Conservation Society scientists are doing to conserve wildlife.  Campers will then use what they've learned to help, including educating Bronx Zoo visitors at a special Conservation Station about ways we can all help save wildlife!

Ocean Champions

Location: New York Aquarium (WCS), Brooklyn, NY

Dates: Monday, August 12-Friday, August 16, 2019

Care about the ocean? So do we! Find out what the Wildlife Conservation Society and New Yorkers are doing to take care of our oceans around the world from Indonesia to Brooklyn. Campers will talk to experts, meet local animal ambassadors up close, and explore the aquarium exhibits and Coney Island Beach to create our own campaigns and projects to inspire positive change!

Woodland Adventures

Location: Wave Hill, Bronx, NY

Dates: Monday, July 15-Friday, July 19, 2019

Calling all future scientists! Spend a week at Wave Hill learning about the urban woodlands of New York and the wildlife that relies on them. Campers will investigate the parts of a forest, from trees and pollinators to soil and decomposers. Through hands-on, immersive activities, campers will develop their knowledge about urban forests and why they are so important!
