STEM Matters NYC Programs: Entering Grade 6

Shine this summer with STEM!

Explore the one-week camps for students entering grade 6 in September. All these camps take place Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm each day.

Aerospace Camp

Location: NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics, Lower East Side, Manhattan

Choose one session:

  • Session A: Monday, July 15 - Friday, July 19, 2024 or
  • Session B: Monday, July 22 - Friday, July 26, 2024 or
  • Session C: Monday, July 29 - Friday, August 2, 2024

Do you want to be an astronaut? Join the NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics (NYCCAAM) for a week of astronaut and pilot training! Explore flight simulators in the NASA Aerospace Education Lab, construct and launch rockets, design in the 3D printing lab, and build and program Mars rovers with SPIKE Prime LEGO robots. During this action-packed week, simulate astronaut training and learn about the history of space exploration to prepare for your ultimate mission: a simulated space adventure.

Discovery Camp

Location: Staten Island Museum in Randall Manor, Staten Island

Dates: Monday, July 22 - Friday, July 26, 2024

Calling all science enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers! Discover the wonders of our natural world while hiking local trails, studying pond life, and enjoying hands-on, interactive workshops with our community partners from Freshkills Park. Whether you are harnessing the sun to cook in a solar oven, exploring the importance of sustainable architecture or mapping local biodiversity, each challenge will channel your creative energy and spark your imagination!

NYC Behind the Scenes

Location: New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side, Manhattan

Dates: Monday, July 22 - Friday, July 26, 2024

Spend a week at New-York Historical Society to explore the historic institutions and heroic people that helped make New York City a vibrant metropolis, and those who keep it a functioning home for nearly 9 million people today. From the water in our pipes, to the roads we drive on, to the sanitation workers that come right to our curbs, it takes a lot of work to keep this city going! Learn about New York City history and the creation of the systems we interact with everyday, but might never notice. Participate in hands-on activities, get up close and personal with archival materials, meet living history reenactors, and create a "Then and Now" photo journal of New York City to commemorate everything learned throughout the week.

Aerospace Academy

Global Conservationists

Location: Queens Zoo in Corona, Queens

Dates: Monday, July 22 - Friday, July 26, 2024

Want to help animals, people, and our planet? Spend a week at the Queens Zoo and become a global conservationist! Explore how the changing climate affects ecosystems. Invent and engineer new solutions for conservation issues, craft new things from old materials, and design wildlife corridors. Join us to explore creative, nature-based solutions to help our changing world.

Young Maker STEAM Camp

Location: MakerSpace NYC in the Brooklyn Army Terminal, Brooklyn

Dates: Monday, July 29 - Friday, August 2, 2024

Explore the world of simple and advanced machines at MakerSpace NYC at the Brooklyn Army Terminal! Each day, work on creative projects using simple machines such as levers or wheels, alongside modern technology such as laser cutters and 3D printers. Work on individual and group projects that culminate in a group exhibition for family members on Friday afternoon.
